Lily Pond

Lily Pond is another easy but rewarding Adirondack Mountain hiking and backpacking trail. It can be walked (… or cross country skied in about an hour). There are actually two trails that lead to the pond, both 2.3 miles from the trail head to the pond. We took trail from the south so that’s the one I’ll describe here.
To find the trail head take the Adirondack Northway (I-87) to Exit 25. Proceed east on Route 8 for approximately 3 miles ( … along Brant Lake) and turn onto Grassville Road. This road is paved but toward the end it is remote and unpaved. My understanding is that it is usually plowed in the winter for snowshoe hikers and snowmobile access. The trail head is located at the end of Grassville Road and just to the left of these buildings.
There is a gradual easy climb for about the first mile. The total elevation change is just under 400 feet. But we hardly noticed it. I think the elevation change is mostly when you hike in from the north. About half way in there will be a trail to the left but stay to the right. There are signs at the intersecting trail indicating 1.2 miles to the pond (… at least when I hiked the trail). Depending on the time of year the trail can be wet. We went in April and on just two occasions we had to exit the trail briefly to avoid the water.
In another half mile or so there will a trail coming in from the right but go straight. It is about another 0.7 miles to the south end of the pond. I understand that camping is permitted as you’ll see some places where hikers set up camp. There is also good camping on the north side of the pond. Lily Pond is quite beautiful and the view is real nice especially to the northwest where you can see the cliffs of Sand Beach Mountain. There is also good fishing. Just look at the fish we saw in the stream leading into the pond !!!
If you are in the Brant Lake area of the Adirondack Park, try the hike to Lily Pond. And maybe even spend the night camping. I’m sure you’ll like it. Enjoy!
