Alpacas
Cute, Soft, Cuddly

So what are Alpacas? These beautiful animals are related to Llamas and are actually members of the Camel family. They are native to South America where they primarily live in the Andes Mountains. Well, now you don’t have to travel all the way to the Andes Mountains in South America to see them! You can see them right here in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, USA! (… just 5-10 minutes from Loon Lake and Gore Mountain.) If you are an animal lover and looking for another activity to do while visiting or vacationing in the Adirondack Park, you should stop by and check them out. And it’s free! (… at least it was the last time we went!)
They are located at a place called “Gore Mountain Farm”. The farm, a small family run business, is located at 2642 State Route 28 in the Town of North Creek. Alpacas are raised for their fleece. If you’ve ever felt the fleece you immediately notice how light and soft it is. It is much softer and warmer than sheep's wool. In addition to utilizing and selling fleece, the owners specialize in breeding these elite show quality animals and have produced many ribbon winning champions in the show ring. The owners also have a gift shop with excellent alpaca clothing such as sweaters, socks, gloves and much more. In addition they have a assortment of things made from the fiber including blankets, raw fleece and even stuffed animals (… very soft and cuddly)! They also offer yarn in many colors from their own herd and as well as imported yarn.
There were about 20 of these cuddly creatures at the farm when we visited. They are very cute, and extremely soft. I’m sure the kids will love them too. These "Unicorns without Horns" (... as the owner affectionately calls them) are sometimes rather friendly. I say sometimes because you should remember that they are not pets and you never know. Check with the owner. He will tell you which ones are the friendliest. If you decide to make this attraction part of your Adirondack adventures you should probably call first as they are sometimes closed for travel during the show season.
